We believe that God is the creator and ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three personalities: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. *Genesis 1:1, 26, 27, 3:22; Psalms 90:2; Matthew 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Corinthians 13:14* We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God; He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on the cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of kings, and Lord of lords. Matthew 1:22, 23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14,15; 1 Corinthians 15:3,4; Romans 1:3,4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14,15; Titus 2:13 We believe that the Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He's present in the world to make us aware of our need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. As Christians, we seek to live under His control daily. 2 Corinthians 3:17; John 16:7-13, 14:16,17; Acts 1:8; 1 Corinthians 2:12, 3:16; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:18 We believe that after being born anew, we need the fullness of God’s spirit in our hearts. When we make a complete commitment to Him, He cleanses our spirit and gives us the power to live victoriously. Matthew 3:11, 22:37-40; 1 John 4:17-18; Romans 6, 7, 8; Galatians 5:16-26; Acts 1:4-8 The Church is the active body of Christ in the world today. It is called together by the Holy Spirit, through the Word, for the purpose of fulfilling God’s plan for the world until Christ returns which is the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. We believe that the Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living, giving us all we need to know about how to be saved. 2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20, 21; 2 Timothy 1:13; Psalms 119:105,160, 12:6; Proverbs 30:5 We believe that people are made in the spiritual image of God to be like Him in character. People are the supreme object of God’s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called “sin”. This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life. Genesis 1:27; Psalms 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a; Romans 3:23; Isaiah 59:1, 2 We believe that salvation is God’s free gift to us, but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith, we are saved, the old record of sin is wiped clean, and we are born anew. Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6, 1:12; Titus 3:5 We believe that people were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is hell. To be eternally in union with Him is eternal life. Heaven and hell are real places of eternal existence. John 3:16; John 14:17; Romans 6:23; Romans 8:17-18; Revelation 20:15; 1 Corinthians 2:7-9 At First Church of the Nazarene, you’ll find a warm, family-friendly community with a rich spiritual heritage. At the heart of our church’s mission and vision is Harlan, our Lead Pastor. With a deep love for God, a passion for people, and a commitment to biblical truth, he faithfully shepherds our congregation with humility, wisdom, and purpose. As Lead Pastor, Harlan provides spiritual direction, teaches the Word of God with clarity and conviction, and leads our church in fulfilling its calling to love God, love others, and make disciples. Whether preaching on Sunday mornings, praying with a family in need, or casting vision for the future, he serves with a servant’s heart and a leader’s strength. Harlan has been in ministry for over 45 years and brings a wealth of experience, a heart for the local church, and a desire to see lives transformed by the gospel. He is passionate about helping people take their next steps in faith—whether they are new to church or have been walking with Christ for years. We’re blessed to have Jim serve as our Associate Pastor—a gifted leader, compassionate shepherd, and faithful servant of Christ. In this vital role, he works closely with our Lead Pastor and ministry teams to support the spiritual growth, care, and discipleship of our church family. With a heart for people and a deep love for God’s Word, Jim is involved in many aspects of church life, including preaching, pastoral care, teaching, and leadership development. Whether encouraging others in their walk with Christ, helping organize ministry efforts, or simply sitting and praying with someone in need, he brings a steady, Spirit-led presence to all that he does. We’re excited to introduce Hunter, our passionate and energetic Youth Pastor, who leads our students with a heart full of faith, compassion, and purpose. He is committed to helping middle and high school students grow in their relationship with Jesus, build meaningful friendships, and discover their God-given identity and purpose. With a strong foundation in biblical teaching and a genuine love for the next generation, Hunter creates a welcoming space where students can ask honest questions, worship freely, and have a lot of fun along the way. From weekly youth nights and Bible studies to retreats and outreach events, he is focused on shaping a generation of Christ-followers who live boldly and love deeply. At the heart of our worship ministry is Julia, our dedicated Worship Leader. With a deep passion for leading others into the presence of God, Julia brings both musical excellence and spiritual authenticity to every service. Whether guiding us through heartfelt praise or reflective worship, she seeks to create an atmosphere where lives are transformed and hearts are drawn closer to Christ. More than anything, she believes that worship is more than a moment—it’s a lifestyle of surrender, joy, and connection with God. Gabby serves as our Children’s Ministry Director and brings a deep passion for helping kids grow in their understanding of God’s love. With a heart for both children and families, Gabby works to create a welcoming, safe, and fun environment where kids—from nursery through elementary—can explore the Bible, build friendships, and begin their journey of faith. Whether it’s Sunday morning programs, special events, or everyday moments, Gabby believes every child is created with purpose and deserves to know they are loved by God. Behind the scenes of our day-to-day operations is Carol, our dedicated Administrative Director. With a heart for ministry and a gift for organization, she ensures that everything at our church runs smoothly—from coordinating schedules and managing communications to overseeing finances and supporting our ministry teams. Carol brings years of administrative and leadership experience, along with a passion for creating systems that support the mission of the church. She plays a vital role in keeping our staff and volunteers equipped, our events well-organized, and our resources stewarded with integrity and excellence. At the heart of our church’s commitment to emotional, spiritual, and relational well-being is Linda, our Director of Care and Counseling. With deep compassion and a Christ-centered approach, she leads our care ministry, offering support, guidance, and hope to individuals and families navigating life’s challenges. Linda brings many years of experience in pastoral care and counseling, along with professional training in counseling. Whether offering one-on-one counseling, grief support, crisis care, or marriage and family guidance, she creates a safe, confidential space where people can find healing and encouragement rooted in the love of Christ. Known for her gentle presence, deep wisdom, and listening heart, Linda embodies the compassion of Jesus in every interaction. Leading the way in our discipleship and Christian education efforts is Diana, our devoted Sunday School Superintendent. With a passion for teaching God’s Word and nurturing spiritual growth across all ages, she oversees the planning, coordination, and development of our Sunday School ministry. Diana works closely with teachers, parents, and church leadership to ensure our classes are Christ-centered, engaging, and spiritually enriching. From selecting curriculum to training volunteers and organizing special events, she helps create a dynamic learning environment where children, youth, and adults can grow in faith and knowledge of the Bible. Diana is known for her thoughtful leadership, encouraging spirit, and heart for equipping others to serve. She believes that Sunday School is more than a weekly class—it’s a foundational part of building a lifelong relationship with Jesus. Behind the scenes of every service, stream, and soundcheck is Robert, our dedicated Technology Director. With a passion for excellence, he ensures that our church’s technology—both in-person and online—runs smoothly to support meaningful worship and connection. From managing audio, video, and lighting systems to overseeing live streams, media production, and tech infrastructure, Robert plays a vital role in helping us share the gospel with clarity and creativity. But he will be the first to say that none of it would be possible without the incredible support team that serves alongside him. This dedicated group of volunteers and team members is essential in making each service and event run with excellence and purpose. Serving at the heart of our church operations is Mary, our friendly Administrative Assistant. With a welcoming spirit, she keeps things running smoothly behind the scenes so that our ministries can thrive and our church family can stay connected. Mary handles a wide range of responsibilities—from managing communications, coordinating schedules, and preparing weekly materials to supporting our staff, volunteers, and church members with care and professionalism. She is often the first voice you hear or the first face you see when contacting the church office, always ready to help with warmth and grace. Helping to direct our youth with passion, vision, and a heart for Christ is Eric, our Nazarene Youth International (NYI) President. In this vital role, he serves as a spiritual mentor and encourager to the teens and young adults of our church, helping them grow in faith, fellowship, and service. Eric is dedicated to creating a safe, fun, and Christ-centered environment where young people can encounter God, ask honest questions, and develop lasting relationships. From helping plan youth services and Bible studies to organizing events, retreats, and service opportunities, he works closely with our youth pastor to inspire the next generation to live boldly for Jesus. THEY WILL NOT BE PUT TO SHAME WHEN THEY CONTEND WITH THEIR OPPONENTS IN COURT. # **HOW SHOULD I PREPARE MY KIDS?** ### [Abilene First Church of the Nazarene](https://www.fcnabilene.org) Every Sunday morning we provide a safe environment for kids from birth through fifth grade where they can learn about Jesus and connect with each other. Our volunteers are the heartbeat of our ministry, and it’s an honor to serve with each and every one of them as they love on kids each week! Every volunteer who leads in the Kids Ministry has had a background check and is committed to making the ministry a safe, Biblically relevant, and fun environment for your kids. Each Sunday morning, children gather in classrooms by age or grade to dive into the Bible through storytelling, crafts, memory verses, and group discussions. It's a space where questions are welcomed, and God’s Word comes alive! Children join the main worship for singing, then head to a kid-friendly service designed just for them. With energetic worship, multimedia lessons, and interactive teaching, Children's Church is a time of fun and faith-building. Safety is Our Priority! We take every step to ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment. All volunteers are background-checked and we follow age-appropriate adult-to-child ratios. Thank you so much for helping us as we strive to make our Kids Ministry a safe environment for your kids to learn about God. At First Church of the Nazarene, we believe that every child is a precious gift from God, created with purpose and loved deeply. In our Children’s Ministry, it’s our joy and mission to create a safe, fun, and faith-filled environment where kids can learn about Jesus in a way that makes sense to them. Each week, your children will experience engaging Bible teaching, worship, activities, and relationships that help them grow in their faith and know they are part of God’s big story. Our team of trained, background-checked volunteers is passionate about helping kids discover who God is and how much He loves them. We are honored to partner with you in raising the next generation to follow Jesus with joy and confidence. Considering that the early church worshipped in large settings in the synagogues as well as in homes, we unite together similarly in order to be in deeper fellowship with God and one-another. God has reconciled us not only to Himself but also to each other. This "each other" is called His Church. Thus, we intentionally strive toward community through men's/women's groups, home gatherings, and other personal settings. We have been created to live in community and not in isolation. Physically, we do live in a community, but spiritually, socially, and relationally we often live our lives in isolation. We find ourselves with no one to turn to when we have a major issue that has just surfaced in our life. Living in community affords us the opportunity to more wholly experience God through close relationships as we play and pray together, as we encourage and help one another, and as we study and live out God’s word together. Small groups are the heartbeat of discipleship at First Church of the Nazarene. These gatherings offer a space to dive deeper into God’s Word, pray for one another, and be equipped to live out your faith. This is where we build meaningful relationships, share life’s joys and challenges, and walk together in faith. We believe transformation happens in circles, not just rows—so we invite you to step into a smaller setting where faith becomes personal and community becomes family. Your generosity helps create a church where people feel welcomed, led, and loved—a place where life-changing stories are being written every week. On behalf of those stories, thank you for giving from your heart. We give in order to be blessed, not for fear of anything negative in our lives. We give out of gratitude and love! You can give your gift safely and securely online - this is one of the easiest ways to give to our church. Thank you. As people of God we give because God has given so much to us. God doesn't need our money, but he does want what it represents: our purposes, passions, and priorities. We give to make a Kingdom impact locally in Abilene, across the country, as well as globally through mission efforts. We give to increase the Kingdom through our generosity so that others may know Jesus better! FCN believes in creating opportunities to serve and bless our local Abilene community. Most of your financial contributions stay in the area, enabling us to do the work that God has called us to in our local community.  We have specific ministries we support, as well as our own initiatives that we spend your generous donations on. When Jesus commissioned his disciples before His ascension, He said, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." At FCN, we take this command of making disciples in all nations very seriously, which leads us to giving a percentage of your tithe and offerings to work God is doing globally. We know the teenage years are full of change, questions, and opportunities. That’s why we create a safe and fun environment where students can be themselves, explore their faith, and learn how to live it out in everyday life. Our goal is simple: to see every student come to know Jesus personally, grow in their faith, and make an impact in their world. We’re not just a youth group—we’re a family. And there’s always room for more. I just want to say how excited I am about what God is doing in the lives of our students here at First Church of the Nazarene. Being a teenager in today’s world isn’t easy—but I believe this generation is not just the future of the Church, they’re a vital part of it right now. I'm passionate about creating a space where students can be themselves, ask honest questions, and discover who God created them to be. My heart is to help them build a faith that’s real—one that lasts beyond Sunday mornings and into everyday life. Planning your visit isn’t required, but it really helps us prepare for you! It lets us know you're coming so we can greet you, answer any questions, and help make your first experience as smooth and welcoming as possible. We know visiting a new church can feel a little intimidating — but we want you to feel right at home the moment you arrive. Whether you're exploring faith, coming back to church, or looking for a new church family, you’re welcome here. Come as you are! Most people dress casually, and we want you to feel comfortable. You’ll be greeted at the door by our welcome team who are happy to help you find your way around. Our services last about an hour and a half and include live worship music, prayer, and a Bible-based message that’s practical and easy to understand — whether you’ve been in church your whole life or this is your first time. We love families! Our Kids Ministry is available for infants through 5th grade, with safe, age-appropriate environments where your kids will learn about Jesus and have a ton of fun. You can check them in when you arrive, and our trained volunteers will take care of the rest. You won’t be singled out or asked to say anything. If you’re comfortable, we’d love for you to fill out a [Connect Card](https://fcnabilene.churchcenter.com/people/forms/607333?open-in-church-center-modal=true) so we can say hi, answer any questions, and help you take a next step when you’re ready. Be sure to stop by our Welcome Center before or after the service — we’d love to meet you and give you a small gift just to say thanks for coming! And who doesn't like free coffee and donuts! We’re excited to meet you and are ready to welcome you personally! Our Sunday School classes start at 9:30 am and our Sunday morning worship service begins at 10:30 am. We also offer Sunday evening activities at 6:00 pm and Wednesday activities at 7:00 pm. Come a few minutes early to grab coffee and find a seat! We are located at 2849 Beltway South in Abilene, TX. Look for the First Church of the Nazarene sign out front. Parking is available on-site, with accessible spaces close to both the main entrances. Come as you are! People at First Church of the Nazarene wear everything from jeans and t-shirts to business casual to shorts and a t-shirt. You’ll be welcomed no matter what you wear. Our services typically last about 90 minutes and include worship through music, prayer, Scripture, and a Bible-based message. We strive for a worship experience that is both reverent and relevant. Absolutely! We offer a Nursery, Sunday School and Children’s Church during the service. All of our kids' workers are background-checked and trained to keep your children safe and cared for. Not at all. We won’t make you stand up or introduce yourself. You're welcome to participate as much or as little as you feel comfortable. That love overflows into how we care for one another—loving our neighbors as ourselves, building authentic relationships, and walking together in grace and truth. But our mission doesn’t stop there. We are also called to be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world: serving with humility, responding to the needs around us, and working for justice, peace, and hope in our communities and beyond. Our desire is to be a church where worship is passionate, people are valued, and lives are changed by the love of Christ. We gather to grow in faith, scatter to serve, and live each day as part of God’s mission to redeem and restore the world. We are passionate about cultivating a deep and personal relationship with God through worship, Scripture, prayer, and spiritual formation. Everything begins and ends with our love for Him. We are called to love one another as Christ has loved us—sacrificially, compassionately, and without judgment. In community, we support, encourage, and challenge one another to grow. We believe faith is active. Whether across the street or across the globe, we serve with open hearts, generous hands, and a commitment to justice, mercy, and reconciliation. The story of our church began in 1904, when a small but passionate group of believers came together with a vision to live out and share the message of holiness found in Jesus Christ. That early group laid the foundation for what would become Abilene First Church of the Nazarene—a faithful, welcoming community rooted in love, service, and spiritual growth. In those early years, worship gatherings were held in one of our first church buildings located at 8th and Chestnut Street where the church began to take shape, both in structure and in spirit. Those were formative years, filled with the energy of revival and a deep commitment to the message of sanctification. As the congregation grew, so did the need for more space. A newer and bigger building was acquired on South 14th and Vine, where the church continued to thrive. This season was marked by strong community outreach and expanding ministries for youth and families. In time, we quickly outgrew those facilities, and God led the church to relocate and build a new building where we currently call home located at 2849 Beltway South. The church entered a time of renewal and vision, embracing both tradition and innovation to reach new generations with the gospel. Today, we remain focused on our mission to make Christlike disciples in our community and beyond. Across more than 120 years, our church has experienced seasons of growth, transition, and transformation. Through every chapter—every sermon preached, every baptism celebrated, every child dedicated—God has proven Himself faithful. We honor the legacy of those who have come before us, and we look to the future with hopeful expectation. Whether you’re new to our story or have been part of it for decades, you are welcome here. The Church of the Nazarene is a global Christian denomination in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition, centered on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
